Life moves fast, and oftentimes feels like it’s moving even faster. In the hectic everyday of life, we begin to focus overwhelmingly on what’s going wrong, and lose sight of what’s going right, and what we can use to get better. I believe that every single person has the ability to change and live the life they want too; the trouble lies in the path from where we are to where we want to be.
In my approach to therapy, grounded in a framework where I as the counselor am the advocate for helping you make the changes that you want to see in your life, we’ll use evidence-based counseling approaches like Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Strengths-Based Positive Psychology to explore not only what’s troubling you in life, but also the tools, strengths, and abilities that you already have to begin making a change. In tandem with this, we’ll incorporate elements of Existential Counseling and Philosophy to determine where you want to go in life, and how we can get there.
In my two and a half years providing mental health and direct supportive care to members of the homeless community in the Lawrence-Kansas City area, I’ve come to know many of the problems which can stop people from reaching their goals and living a life of flourishing. From financial insecurity, to mild and severe mental health concerns, to drug abuse and dependence, I have experience in providing care and support for these concerns and more. Additionally, as a union organizer and labor advocate, I know the demands that work and life place on us, and can work with you to meet those demands and find a work-life balance that heightens your life, rather than hindering it.
In my clinical experience through the University of Kansas – the only counseling program in the United States with a focus on Positive Psychology – I have developed clinical experience in working with individuals from adolescence into late adulthood, and with couples and family systems. Additionally, I have experience in both brief and prolonged therapy interventions meaning that whatever your timeline is for change, we can work to create a counseling experience that fits your needs.
